The Great Star Theater
Location: 636 Jackson St, San Francisco, CA 94133
The Great Star Theater was originally named as The Great China Theater that was built in 1925, and it has been a place for people to watch Chinese Opera for the past 90 years. A projection booth was added and many live shows started to appear at the theater in 1940, so they decided to change the name to Great Star Theater.
In the 60s, The Great Star was one of the six US theaters that purchased by Run Run Shaw, so he could run the films with their original language to Cantonese and Mandarin speakers in the west of San Francisco. In 2015, Paul Nathan turned The Great Star to a non-profit corporation with Jordan Nathan, Ken Newman, Paul Spiegel, and John Cervelli, in purpose of preserving the theater as a valuable place for the community.
